USB–DMX vs Art-Net: When to Choose Each

After covering USB–DMX interfaces, universe counts, optical isolation, software compatibility, first setup , and common connection mistakes, the buying question lands: stay on USB–DMX or move to Art-Net? This is not “USB bad / Ethernet good.” They are different architectures for getting DMX512 to fixtures. Here we compare transport, distance, networking, software path, and system cost using confirmed ElectroTAS gear: TZ-Mini, TZ-1U, TZ-2U and the TH-2U Art-Net.

Choose USB–DMX when…

  • You need one or two local universes with the patch beside the control seat. Mini or TZ-1U for a single universe; TZ-2U when you want 1024 channels over USB.
  • FOH is a traveling laptop: rehearsal rooms, small clubs, emergency backup. USB packs and unpacks fast.
  • The plant is a classic XLR chain: interface → 120 Ω DMX → fixtures, with no lighting switch or VLAN to babysit.
  • You already live in PC lighting software (QLC+, FreeStyler, and friends) and do not want to stand up a lighting network yet.
  • Simplicity and fewer moving parts win versus node + switch + IP hygiene.

Keep the usual ~32 devices per DMX output at 120 Ω in mind, and remember TZ-1U’s dual Neutrik jacks share one universe (opto splitter), not two. See 1 vs 2 universes. 1 vs 2 universes.

Choose Art-Net when…

  • You already have (or want) an Ethernet backbone in the hall, theatre, or festival: Cat to the node, short DMX to the bar.
  • Long DMX snakes from FOH hurt: cleaner to run network and park the node near the fixtures.
  • You distribute nodes, or the console / software already speaks Art-Net natively.
  • You need port flexibility: TH-2U offers two Neutrik XLR3 ports configurable as DMX in or out, up to two universes, per-port Art-Net universe addressing, LTP/HTP merge from two sources, status/Art-Net/power LEDs, web configuration, and IP MODE for quick IP assignment.
  • You want the control seat electrically away from stage plant: the node lives on the network and delivers opto-isolated DMX.

Art-Net does not retire 120 Ω DMX on the final hop. The node still needs proper XLR runs. The protocol only changes how the universe reaches the node.

Hybrid reality (very common)

Plenty of shows are neither “all USB” nor “all Art-Net.” Real patterns:

  • USB at the programming seat (TZ on the laptop) and Art-Net on the venue backbone when software or console can play different roles.
  • Start on USB (Mini → TZ-1U/2U) and grow into TH-2U once switches, distance, or a second networked control seat appear.
  • USB backup even when the main show rides Art-Net: a TZ on the emergency notebook saves the night if the network dies.

TZ and TH are not always rivals — they do different jobs. USB bridges the PC; Art-Net bridges the network.

  • Sometimes the expensive “upgrade” is not the node — it is network cabling that does not exist yet. If the room already has Cat, Art-Net can be cleaner than a 50 m DMX snake. If there is no network, USB often wins on simplicity.

Does Art-Net replace DMX cable?

No. Art-Net carries universes over Ethernet to the node; node-to-fixture still needs DMX512 on XLR with 120 Ω cable.

Does buying TZ-2U mean I “have Art-Net”?

No. TZ-2U is two-universe USB–DMX. Art-Net in the ElectroTAS catalog is the TH-2U Ethernet node.

Can QLC+ do both Art-Net and USB?

QLC+ can operate in different worlds depending on configuration. USB still means exclusive ownership of the adapter; Art-Net rides the network. Never open two USB owners at once.

Is TZ-1U still useful if I move to Art-Net later?

Yes as a USB seat / backup / rehearsal box. The network jump is a node (TH-2U), not a “conversion” of the TZ.

How many universes does TH-2U provide?

Up to two universes (1024 channels), with per-port configurable Art-Net universe addressing.

What is LTP/HTP merge on TH-2U?

It combines output from two sources using LTP (latest takes precedence) or HTP (highest takes precedence). Handy when two controllers feed the same physical universe.

Do I need a managed switch for a single TH-2U?

For one node on a simple network, clean basic Ethernet usually works. VLANs and QoS show up when the network is shared with heavy traffic or many nodes — a venue plan, not a magic TH-2U requirement.

Mini or TH-2U for a touring DJ with eight movers?

If the patch fits one universe and the laptop sits beside the dancefloor: TZ-Mini or TZ-1U. If the venue already drops Ethernet to the stage and you want the node on the bar: TH-2U.
