What “support” means in practice

Drivers vs lighting software (different layers)

Day-one classic: install QLC+ (or another console app) and assume “the driver came with it.” Sometimes the OS still needs the manufacturer driver pack. They are different layers:

• Driver: makes the operating system see the USB–DMX hardware. Without it, lighting software has nobody to talk to.
• Lighting software: QLC+, FreeStyler, and others listed on TZ pages — creative control. Real compatibility notes: day 4.
• Connection mistakes: two apps fighting one USB, wrong cable, soft opened twice — day 6. We cross-link that guide; we do not rewrite it here.

Short rule: official pack first (Downloads hub or stick), then lighting soft, then the first cue. Reverse that order and “not detected” looks like a soft bug when it is often a driver or USB-ownership issue.

Firmware: when it matters, and safe buyer habits

Firmware is not “flash whatever a chat uploaded.” It is the device’s internal software. As a buyer, you need judgment — not a lab howto.

• When it usually matters: support or an official release note calls out a relevant fix; a documented behavior matches a known update; you are commissioning a fixed install and want the ElectroTAS-recommended baseline.
• When it does not: show night, no version backup, no official package, or “someone said you must flash.”
• Safe high-level habits: use official packages only from the Downloads hub or the product page; note the current version before changing anything; read the pack’s own docs; skip third-party files; if unsure, email support with model + version + symptom.

Workflow: unbox to first cue (docs open)

• Step 1 — Name the exact model
  • TZ-Mini, TZ-1U, TZ-2U, TH-2U, D21R, D28R, U24R, DMX-RGB-AIO, and so on. Photograph the label if needed. USB intro: day 1 · 1U vs 2U: day 2.
• Step 2 — Grab the official package
  • Open Downloads or the product Downloads section. If a USB stick (TH-2U) or in-box manuals (TZ / D28R) shipped, use them. Save the ZIP in a folder named after the model.
• Step 3 — Separate driver from lighting soft
  • Install what the pack specifies for your OS. Then open one compatible lighting app (day 4). Close anything else that fights for the USB (day 6).
• Step 4 — Cable with basic bus hygiene
  • DMX 120 Ω cable (not 80 Ω audio): cable post. Terminate the line (TDMX) and diagnose if needed (MTDMX). Days 16 · 15.
• Step 5 — First cue with the manual in view
  • Do not memorize: keep the PDF/manual open. Confirm detection, one test channel, then build the show patch. If it fails, contact support with model + OS + which pack you already downloaded.

Common support mistakes (the expensive ones)

• Hunting drivers on random forums instead of the Downloads hub or the official product page.
• Treating lighting soft as the driver: QLC+ installed does not guarantee the OS sees the USB device.
• Ignoring the USB stick / in-box manuals and reinventing setup from scratch.
• Opening two apps at once on the same interface (day 6).
• Asking for help with no data: “it doesn’t work” without model, OS, screenshot, or pack version.
• Flashing firmware on show night without an official package or version note.
• Using 80 Ω audio cable and blaming the driver (cable 80/120 post).
