Once you know you need a USB–DMX interface, the next buying question shows up fast: is one universe (512 channels) enough, or should you go to two (up to 1024)?
Overbuying rarely ruins a show, but it can waste budget. Underbuying bites later—usually when you add moving heads in extended mode or a LED bar that eats half a universe.
This guide complements USB–DMX Interface: What It Is, What Its For, and Who Should Get One. We ground channel math, separate two XLR outs of the same universe from two real universes, and map when TZ-Mini, TZ-1U, or TZ-2U is the sensible ElectroTAS pick.
A DMX512 universe is one control stream with up to 512 channels. Each channel carries a value from 0 to 255. Fixtures use multiple channels depending on mode (dimmer, RGB, pan/tilt, gobos, etc.).
Practical rules:
1. 512 is not 512 lights. It is 512 channels. A 3-channel LED PAR is not the same as a 32-channel moving head.
2. Your patch (start address + mode) determines how many channels each fixture uses in that universe.
3. If you run out, you cannot stretch the universe: you need another universe (another independent logical output) or lower modes / reduce fixtures.
1 universe vs 2 universes: the real difference
| Idea | 1 universe | 2 universes |
|---|---|---|
| Max channels | 512 | 1024 (512 + 512) |
| Independent streams | 1 | 2 |
| Patch | One address space 1–512 | Two spaces (Univ A and Univ B) |
| Typical use | Small/medium shows, churches, bars, labs | Dense mover rigs, pixel LEDs, FOH + stage |
Important: in the TZ Pro family, the TZ-1U has two Neutrik XLR outputs of the same universe (useful for feeding the same signal to two lines, with optical isolation). That does not double channels to 1024. For two real universes you need something like the TZ-2U.
Signal scheme
- PC with lighting software (QLC+ / FreeStyler)
- USB into the interface
- 1-universe branch: TZ-Mini / TZ-1U → XLR (1 or 2 outs of the same universe) → fixtures line A (up to 512 ch)
- 2-universe branch: TZ-2U → Univ A (512 ch) + Univ B (512 ch) → fixtures on two independent lines
How to count channels honestly
Before you buy, make a short sheet:
1. List every fixture and the mode you will actually run in the show.
2. Sum channels. Leave a 15–25% margin.
3. If the total with margin crosses 512, you need a second universe or lower modes.
Orientative examples (not product specs)
- 10x LED PARs in 3–7-channel modes ≈ 30–70 channels → one universe is plenty.
6x moving heads in 16–24 channel modes ≈ 96–144 → one universe is comfortable if the rest is simple.
12x movers in 32-channel mode + wash + strobes + hazers ≈ easy to exceed 400–500 → 2 universes is advisable.
Pixel mapping / LED bars: a second universe is often required.
Golden rule: count with the real show mode.
When 1 universe (512 channels) is enough
- Small/medium rig with a comfortable patch under 512.
- You prioritize simplicity in QLC+/FreeStyler.
- You move setups between rooms without Art-Net yet.
- Backup or parallel programming position.
ElectroTAS line:
- TZ-Mini — compact 1-universe.
- TZ-1U — 1 universe with optical isolation and dual XLR of the same universe.
Optical isolation is day 3; here the focus is capacity.
When 2 universes make sense (up to 1024)
- The sum with margin reaches or exceeds 512.
- You want independent zones (stage vs front wash).
- You do not want to squeeze modes just to fit one universe.
- Growth expected in 6–12 months.
TZ-2U — two USB–DMX universes in the TZ Pro family with optical isolation.
Typical organization: Univ A movers+hazers; Univ B wash+strobes+conventionals.
Dual out is not a second universe (the costliest mistake)
- Two XLR connectors of the same universe = same data, two physical taps. Useful as an opto-isolated splitter.
- Two universes = two independent streams, up to 512 + 512 channels, separate patch.
If the software shows Universe 1 and 2, you need hardware that actually exposes those two universes (e.g. TZ-2U), not just a second jack on the same stream.
2-universe USB–DMX vs Art-Net (teaser)
Several universes, long Ethernet distances or remote nodes → Art-Net/sACN path. For many small/medium setups, 1- or 2-universe USB–DMX remains simpler. The full buying comparison is later on the roadmap: 2-universe USB does not replace a large Art-Net network, but it does solve the 512 → 1024 step without setting up Ethernet.
Decision checklist
1. Did I add channels using the real mode + 15–25% margin?
2. Total comfortably under 512? → 1 universe (TZ-Mini or TZ-1U).
3. Near/over 512 or want separate zones? → 2 universes (TZ-2U).
4. Need a second tap of the same universe + better immunity? → TZ-1U (still 1 universe).
5. Heading toward 3+ universes or remote nodes? → consider Art-Net.
FAQ
Are 512 channels the same as 512 fixtures?
No. They are 512 control channels. Each fixture uses N channels based on its mode.
Can I connect two 1-universe interfaces and add 1024?
Some software can map two devices to two universes, but that means two boxes and two USB ports. A native 2-universe interface (TZ-2U) is usually cleaner.
Does TZ-1U give me 1024 channels because it has two XLRs?
No. They are two outputs of the same universe (up to 512 channels).
Which software works with 1 or 2 universes?
QLC+, FreeStyler and other PC controllers typically map universes to the interface. Assign Universe 1 / 2 in the software patch.
What if I run out mid-tour?
Drop fixture modes, remove non-critical equipment, or add a second universe. Planning a margin avoids that stress.
Do 2 USB universes replace Art-Net?
For many medium-sized shows, yes, they are enough. With remote nodes or more universes, Art-Net scales better.
Where can I see ElectroTAS USB–DMX gear?
At the shop: TZ-Mini, TZ-1U, TZ-2U.
Conclusion
512 channels are enough when the real patch (with margin) fits comfortably in one universe and you prioritize simplicity. Two universes make sense when channel count grows, you want independent zones, or you do not want to program against the 512-channel wall.
Do not confuse dual XLR with dual universe. Count channels using the show mode, choose TZ-Mini / TZ-1U / TZ-2U for capacity, and leave Art-Net for when the network becomes the next problem.
